Cats and dogs are the most common indoor pets in Boca Raton, Florida. Even though these furry friends can bring joy to your life, they can also aggravate allergies and asthma. Cleaning your home regularly and changing the HVAC air filter are two ways to reduce allergens in your pet-friendly home.
Clean Your Home Regularly
Cleaning your home regularly is key to reducing allergens, especially in homes with pets. You should dust and vacuum at least once a week, including all air vents, baseboards and floors. Carpeted floors are a haven for allergens. Ideally, you should replace them with hardwood or laminate flooring. You need to wash and dry area rugs once a week. Remove them when vacuuming to ensure you remove all pet hair underneath. Some experts recommend vacuuming at least three times a week to keep pet dander at bay.
Change the HVAC Air Filter
Avoid using a washable air filter. Even if you wash it once a week, it’s nearly impossible to remove all pet dander. You should use an air filter with a MERV rating of at least 10 for effective filtering. This MERV rating indicates the filter is capable of capturing and removing pet dander from the air flowing through your home. Remember to change your air filter at least every 90 days, or 30 if you suffer from allergies.
Keep the Temperature Low
Airborne allergens become worse in homes with high humidity levels. By lowering the temperature in your home, you can keep humidity levels low and allergens at a minimum. You can wear an extra layer of clothing in the home to accommodate the lower temperature. If you’re struggling to balance the humidity between an ideal 30 and 50 percent, consider investing in a dehumidifier.
